would a +45mm offset for 18" rims be pushing it?

You should be more concerned about clearance... offset has little or no effect on your suspension as far as I know..

I think the main issue is rubbing, but like some have already stated, that may not be an issue. The secondary issue is wearing out the wheel bearings. A friend of mine who used to work at a Subaru dealership told me that he's seen several Subarus with aftermarket wheels that suffered from this.
