Winter Tires
Dexter,
I had a similar question on my mind. I have upgraded to 17's on my '04 WRX and was planning to keep the stock wheels to mount winter tires in a couple of months. Only thing is I'm not thrilled with the winter tire selection in the stock size of 205/55/16. Only three tires available I believe. My question is: is it better to keep the stock size and live with the tire choices, upgrade the width on the stock wheel to 225/50/16 to get more choices (specifically the Blizzak), or do you think it would be ok to run winter tires on the 17's (once again increasing the number of tire choices available). Let me know what you think is the best way to go. Thanks for your help.

Stick w/ 205's for the winter tires. I am running Dunlop Wintersport M2 at 205/55/16's and they worked out great for me.
i-girl - I suggest buying some cheaper 17's and putting on snow tires. You don't want to ruin those expensive rims. Make sure you can clear the brakes though. I don't think think you can run 16's at all. As far as tread width, you can go smaller(215's or 205's).

I-girl, we'll have the ASA KA3-S wheel available this fall in a 17x7.5 that fits your STi - right now they're $139 each. I'd go for a set of those with the stock size in at least an H rated snow tire.
Ants, just repeat HomerJ's post. I use and recommend original 205 width in the Dunlop Winter Sport M2. With that setup, my car is virtually unstoppable in winter conditions. Handling isn't too bad - similar to RE92s.
