Peaty, how tough are the splines? Are they more or less likely to "strip" when you apply force to them? I'm just curious as to what advantage they provide (besides some security) over normal wheel lug/nut combos.

There is a larger surface with the spline and tool contact so you are right you are less likely to round off the corners like you will with a nut. Another nice thing is, the gray/silver part that is tapered rotates freely. So when you tighten the nut down it will not score / scratch the tapered mating surface of the wheel.

I just got my spline drives delivered today, and i noticed that they all came with rubber covers, just like peaty posted earlier. I was just wondering how many of you guys actually use them. I think the lug nut would look better without them. I also think that the rubber cover could easily fall off while driving.

I'm pretty sure that just for shipping purposes so they don't get dinged up when they rattle around in the box.

tip o' the hat, Peaty, very nice work. Why doesn't The Tire Rack carry lug nuts?? It seems like the only thing they are missing!

BTW, opinions: silver or black lug nuts with Light Gray painted wheels?

Tire Rack does have them, they only had the splines in Chrome and not black. I like Tire Rack and because they sponsor SCCA(and here) I like to get my stuff them, however I wanted Black (not crazy about chrome), Silver would have been OK too but splines don't come in that colour. The thing is if you get silver it should match the wheels and if it's not exact it may look funky. Black works for me.

Hey Peaty,

I did a keyword search at Tire Rack and also looked under all of the "other" sections -- where do they hide the McGuards? Or do I have to call them on the phone...

I just looked too and could have sworn they were there. I thought they were showing the chrome ones. My mistake sorry

I have Black SplineDrives with matching black wheel locks on my STI wheels, and they are beautiful. Very well made, albeit a bit expensive. Purchased from Summitracing.com
