What tire size to get for 17's?
I ordered a package deal a couple years ago from Discount Tire Direct. I got the 17" x 7" Konig Absolute Platinums with 215/45/17 Nitto 450's. Horrible tire, but that's another story. If I search now for tire size, Discount Tire recommends a 225/45/17. I know the 17" option on a stock WRX uses 215/45, but the STi uses 225/45's. Which size would be proper for my rims or doesn't it matter. I'm assuming maybe the STi has 17" x 7.5" rims for the increased width? Does it even make a difference? Thanks in advance for any input.

Yes, Nittos are horrible. I had a set and NEVER AGAIN.
Now, as far as tire size, if your wheels are 17 x 7, then 205/45 or 215/45 are the tires sizes you shoudl consider. The 205/45 will make your sidewall be flush w/ the rim of your wheel and the 215/45 will tend to be wider than the rim of the wheel. If you happen to have new wheels that measure 17 x 7.5, then 225/45 would be the best option. I'm currently running 225/46 Yokohamo ES100s on 17 x7.5 Subzeros and they are pretty good for the money. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I'm going to be ordering the Yokohama ES100's. Definitely seem like the best tires for the buck. I read everyone else talking about 225/45 tires, but I think I'll stick with the 215/45's like I had before. Thanks for the reply and help. I definitely love the rims on my car, so I don't think I'll be getting new 17 x 7.5's anytime soon.
On 17x7 I'd still go with 225s. They fit fine on 7" wheels and offer a bit more wheel/curb protection. They also closer replicate the outer diameter of the original tires. Wait to buy your tires for a few more replies to this post - everyone has a theory on this. More points of view will help you make a better decision.
If you look on tire rack, you can find the size tire and click on specs and it will show you the recomended rim width to use.
On a side not, not to try to hijack your thread, I am getting a set of 17x8 Rota Torques and want to know if I should run 225 45 17 or if I can fit 235 40 17? I tolled the fenders on my girlfriend's 03 Tiburon to fit 235 40 18's with success so if I had to do it on mine I could. What do ya think?

I noticed on Subaru's website, that the regular WRX's rim options are a 17 x 7 rim with 215/45's. The STi's rims are 17 x 7.5" with 225/45's. I'm going to go with 215/45/17's since my rims are only 17 x 7". I would think just by judging on this scale, that you should be fine with 235/40's on an 8" width rim. Although, you may have to roll the fenders depending on the offset of the rim. It could be close fit. It might even rub the inside of the tire.

That's interesting. I have heard of many lowered Subes with the same size that don't have problems. Mine is not lowered, yet, although springs are my next mod. <hijack>Just got confirmation from Cobb that my Access Port should be to my doorstep the first week of March</hijack>
