Upgrading tires on '06 Impreza

I want to get rid of the horrible Bridgestone re92's on my 2006 Impreza 2.5i. I have my stock rims and want to keep them.. They are 16 x 7.5.. I'm 99% sure the width is 7.5 anyway.. I'm going off of memory. The tires are 205/55/16... Could I fit 225/50/16 tires on the rims and would they fit the car or would the tires hit the struts? The overall diameter is pretty much identical to stock according to calculations which I want for odometer and speedo purposes. I want a wider tire for better overall grip (and traction in muddy conditions and that size would be great!

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

Goodyear F1 GS D3's are great tires to upgrade to.

Nope. Your rims are 16x6.5. Do you want all seasons or summer only? I just picked up S03's at Tirerack on clearance for very cheap. 215/55/16 is the size you should go w/ on stockers.

OOps my mistake. 16x6.5 does make more sense.. I want a good versatile all season tire that has good wet/dry pavement traction as well as traction on dirt roads and in slick mud.

Looks like I'll be looking for 215/55/16 or maybe 50 series sidewalls.. either one is a little off from OEM for that width.

I love these tires... but the OP also said "muddy conditions" so I'm not sure if this is the way to go. These tires are awesome for dry/wet roads for a daily driver and (noncompetitive) weekend fun car.
