Tires for snow

I'm going to get some rims and tires soon and need some recomedations on tires that are good for snow, maybe all season? I usually take about 10 trips or more a year to tahoe. Would like to know what you've experienced driving in the snow. Ever been told you had to put on chains at a check point? Thats something I do not want to be doing. Thanks for your imput!

Check out the Kuhmo Ecsta ASX tire, drove delivery through a mid-west winter without problems; including backing out of a ditch that had snow up over my hood. and they're still sporty and have a treadwear rating from TireRack of upper 300's to low 400's if I remember right.

I run a seperate set of wheels w/ winter tires on them. I'm running the Dunlop Wintersport SP2's. Might be something to look into if you plan on going that often. You're suppose to carry chains. I've never been asked to put them on.

I have to go with Knight on this one. I have these and they are awesome. I live in Delaware so I don't get that much snow, but I'm often in the Poconos and they are great in the mountains. Great value and not a bad price either...

I've been very pleased with my Nokian NRW's, which have been replaced by WR's. They are an all season tire with the snowflake designation indicating superior snow traction. Like you, I live in the Bay Area and take many trips to Tahoe, especially during the winter. These tires were on the expensive side, but have worn so slowly in the bay area that I think they were cheaper in the long run. Last season was my third season on them, and in January the had enough snow traction to yank a brand new Explorer out of a snow bank with a to rope.

I had Avon Tech MS550 A/S tires. I never used them in teh snow but I did use them in the dirt a lot and they seemed to handle pretty well. I can't give you any info on the treadware cause I also took them on Laguna Seca....so that probably took a 1/4 of their life away

heres the comparison between the Ultra high performance all-season tires on tirerack.com...Avons are at the top

and www.tirerack.com FTW...saved me about $50 over america discount tire on my last purchase, but that depends on the cost of where you get them mounted too

Michelin pilot sports perform well in the snow or wet roads.

I use the dunlop winter sport m3's. they are a lil expensive but they last a long time on road and hardly slide on ice and snow. grippy in deep snow also. I live in truckee year round. 02 wrx.

I have Pirelli Pzero Nero M+S and used them in Tahoe last winter. They work great in the dry and white stuff...

+1 for Falken Ziex 512s, and also Continental Extreme Contact (M+S). Contis were really good in snow and wet, and good for a M+S tire in dry. Can be pricey, though.
