Azenis
Everybody I've talked to at the local SCCA autocross events recommends the Falken Azeni.
The general opinion on the Azenis is "They're cheap, they're sticky, the durability is okay, but whatever you do don't use them in the snow." Khumos (apparently ) will get you a half-second or better over the Azenis, and Hoosiers are better yet - and they're also a heck of a lot more expensive.
I haven't noticed anybody running on the other tires you mentioned.

Auto-X tire size
Here's a question for all the autocrossers out there. What tire size do you suggest for auto-x events? Do you suggest a 225/50/16 (on stock wheels) or 225/45/17 (on aftermarket wheels)? What are each of the sizes benefits and drawbacks?
Thanks!

Depending on your gearing and the normal length of the course you run. If the course you run always top you up at second and not enough in third, get a taller tire since you'll have an advantage being turbo charged.
If you always hit the rev limiter when you hit 65, you need taller tires and if you don't hit 65, shorter tires in a normal autocross in your region.
215.45.16 for bottom end and 225.45.17 for top end. STX and STS allows up to 1*x7.5 wheels sizes.

Most of the STX autoxers in my region go with 17" wheels mostly because the class allows widths up to 245. Most everyone I see in STS and STX also run on the Azenis and bring along water sprayers to cool them down between runs since they've got a pretty narrow optimum temp range and get slippery when they overheat.
Supposedly Falken will have a newer compound for next year's Azeni.
Edit: 17" wheels also let you fit bigger brakes, another nice STX allowance.

sprinter-ae86 has a good point. The type of course you typically run is a factor is the wheel size you choose, as is the class you want to compete in.
To learn what you can and can't modify (and stay in the stock class), get a copy of the SCCA rules - you might be suprised. For example, I found out that I can put on a $700 catback exhaust and stay stock, but if I changed the $100 end links on the rear sway bar I would move to the STX class. ( i think thats the class. they have so many I have trouble keeping them all straight.)
