Stock tires terrible in the snow!?
My RE-92's were decent last winter when I got my car. Went into a snowy parking lot and drifted around and had no trouble maintaining control.
So, this winter we get our first snowfall and I head (cautiously) over to an empty parking lot to see what my traction is like. (after hearing negative comments from others about the RE-92's)
Frankly, I figured they were exagerating. I mean, I only had 26k on the tires, how bad could they be?
Holy S__t!!!! REALLY REALLY scarey floating around on perfectly smooth ice scary. I slowed to almost a complete halt to turn into the parking lot and I slid into the curb! Fortunately, the car's direction didnt change at all so I just drove up onto a curb at less than 1 mph... phew....
I thought maybe it was a fluke and tried to drive as slowly as possible into the parking lot. (which just had an inch or 2 of snow/slush... no ice) Felt like I was at Sno-drift or something... very bad...
Got some decent all weather tires put on for the slushy/snowy/rainy conditions we get here and repeated the performance with complete control. I can play in the snow now! yay!
Ahem....
I got the Michelin HydroEdge's . I dont' necessarily recommend them since they aren't speed rated up to 140... but if I'm going over 118mph in the winter around here I deserve what I get...
So now I need to pick out some summer wheels/tires... YAY!

Same with Michelin, Yokohama, etc. In this, the age of the internet, the key is to do your research and sort the jewels from the junk. I'm not loyal to any brand, I just happen to know the good ones because of the ability to test them all out. I use Michelins in the summer and Dunlops in the winter. My wife's car has Bridgestones in the summer and Michelins in the winter. No real rhyme or reason, just getting the right tires for the right applications.

You really drive Michelins? Hmmmm...
I have the Conti's. They are great in the snow, under normal winter driving, they're very close to dedicated snows. They are also awesome in the rain, which I drive in a lot. And as Dexter says, pretty good in the summer too. Only possible downsides are: 1) I've had one shop tell me they're out of round, another telling me they're perfect, I only notice a little flatspotting overnight in the cold; 2) they're a lot stiffer than the OEM's, I've had many rattles pop up since I got them, course that could be my suspension going out, but they are stiff.

I've been up in the snow a few days this year so far.
My re's have about 12k on them. They suck in the rain. They suck in any cornering situation and they are not great in the snow. I expected to be much more sure footed in the snow. But I have to say that when driving with my brain I have had no troubles at all....stopping fine. No more than expected sliding and what not.....and since they suck...getting crazy has been fun. Was ripping donuts in the snow just last week.
My question is this.....I need winter tires...strait up snow/mud/rain...strait up dedicated winter tires for my stock wheels. I plan to buy a set of 17's for summer tires.
What would you guys recommend for this....some nobby balsy winter tires.
