speed rating

what exactly does it mean and what effects does it have on tire performance and construction ie higher speed rating equals stiffer sidewalls or what?

Higher speed rating simply means they can sustain higher speeds.

The assumptions associated with higher speed ratings might include:

*stiffer sidewall
*rougher ride
*better traction
*softer tread rubber
*quicker wear
*tougher steel belt system
*less tire deformation due to increased air pressure and rotational inertia
*better resistance to heat build up
*better adhesion to a wet road
