Rota DownShift Gunmetals - will they rust in Winter?
I just bought these 17" X 7.5" rims whcih are made of Aluminum..so I am told. Now I am debating whether I should slap these baby's on all year round. I am afraid that it will rust in our winters here in Ontario, Canada where the rodas are salted.
Searching the threads, I read that ALLOY is best. But is ALUMINUM just as good? If so, I want to get some all season high perfermance tires on them (eg. Yokohama H4). If not, I would be better off buying some "real" summer performance tires (yoko ES100) and switch them between winter and summer tires (which is a pain in the a$$ in my opinion but maybe worth while).
whadda you guys think?

Aluminum does not corrode the way your are thinking. It generally builds up a thin oxidation layer (seen as a white layer over time, but very thin) on the outside that is easily removed (usually when you wash them). Salt should not attack it. The only caveat is that your Al may be cheaply alloyed (even aluminum rims are not 100% Al). Ask Rota about their Al alloys if you are really interested! But to be honest they are not going to corrode fast enough as long as you keep 'em clean.
A link about Al wheels (it's for bikes but it applies to anything made of aluminum):
