Performance tires question?
just curious about the offset thing. are 17x7 with a 40mm offset for a 2002 wrx ok? what does offset mean too?
one more question, is 205/40/17 tires ok or is 135/40/17 better for a wrx? sorr, not good with tire stuff. thanks.

as for what offset is, look at the sticky, 40mm seems low, but somebody'll probobly say they're running with only 40 and having no problems, 45-50 is more recommended, i think 48 is most common, while 52 would be prefered. As far as width of tire, I'm assuming u mean 235, not 135? 205 definetly works, as for 235, if its a sedan probably, but dont take my word for it, and if its a wagon probobly not. GL
ok... i just found out what the pffset part means from tirerack. but now im just really curious about how 400mm would be on a wrx. tirerack.com said the wrong offset could have adverse affects on a car. anyone know if 400mm offset would be bad for the wrx?

400mm offset?!?!?!?!? That's outrageous!!!
Anyway, i'm sure you guys have heard me say this before, but i'll say it again like someone predicted earlier in this thread. I run 18x7.5 rims wrapped in 225/40/18's with a +42 offset, AND i'm lowered on Tein S-Techs. I have yet to experience any tire rub whatsoever, whether i'm going over huge speed bumps or doing tight turns.

offset has a direct impact on several aspects of a car including
tire rub
scrub radius
bearing load
torque steer
wheel load capacity
etc.
changing the scrub radius can and will adversely effect handling in most cases
additional bearing load will lead to premature failure
torque steer puts additional stress on steering rack bushings
I could go on but, I think I have made my point
48mm - 53mm offset is the correct fitment for your Subi

cool... thanks a lot guys. so what would be a good tire size for a 17x7 48mm offset rims on a wrx sedan? would 205/40/17 tires be ok? im curious about the speedo being off. is there a different size available but still retain a lowered sidewall? would 45 sidewall be too big? dang.... im askin a lot of questions.... sorry.
