...meh....LOTS of people in other than US markets have used +42's for years on Impreza's....no huhu.
I'd use a +42 for the right wheel.....and an increased track width is a good thing, sometimes
Happy new year, Alex

The only reason you would use a +42, is because in anything wider than a 8.5, inside clearance becomes a problem. Even on some brand 255/40/17 tires. You go 42 if you get a 9"+ wide rim on a flared stock body.
For average/normal user, +45 is max. +44 in worst case, if you really want those CE28N that clear brembo and come on 8.5".
+42 will put stress on the already wacky wheel bearings. While the general concept is that wider track is better, I would disagree in our case. Put it this way, I had to use +38 17x8 rims of a bit and the car handled so bad, I thought I was driving a Celica (which those wheels were made for).
Other than US markets? In Japan, perhaps? Only "show" cars run low offsets. Proper specced TimeAttack and Gymkhana cars don't use lower offsets. And everywhere else in the world? Well, they just don't have the selection we have here and in Japan, so they use rims in 5x100 that were not specced for Subaru's.
Also, I am only talking about 17's. 18's is a whole new story. 18" with +42? No way a 8.5 would allow you to run any respectable size tire (wider and fatter than 225/35/18). And running 18x7.5 on a WRX is sin in my books.
And, I don't mind being proven wrong...
What brand wheels are you looking for? And, what is your budget? You can always get the right wheels from www.subydude.com or any JDM brand from one of our vendors.
