712's are not great for autocrossing. They are a step above RE92's, but a large step bellow the rest of the field. They are cheap of course, and a good street tire.

MX's on the other hand, I want to know more about! I'm probably getting MX's or Yokohama AVS ES100's in 215/45/17's but dont know if I want to risk the treadwear on the MX's as an everyday driver...

Thumbs up MX goodness

I could'nt recomend the MX's more! they are a great tire for the money! Last year I was using 225/45/17 azenis's did a whole auto-x season and some of a slush. when I went to the MX's on my street rims I actualy went to a 215/45/17. I expected to lose alot of grip and feel, but I was Wrong! The MX's feel great the grip is awesome the only place they realy lost out to the azenis was the turn in. the azenis seems to have stiffer side walls and turn in response is little better. As for all out grip they are close. I even won an STX event last year on them when I couldnt get my 16" rims with the azenis mounted in time. I like them!

P.S. I have been impressed with the treadwear so far

No, I was using a 215/45/16 for that last event. as for a 245/40/17 MX vs. a 225/45/17 azenis...dunno I think the MX may weigh just about the same as the falken even though its bigger.

245/40/17 Khumo MX, diam=24.8", section width=9.9", 23lbs.
225/45/17 Azenis, diam=24.9", section width=9.1", 25.9lbs.

so with the MX you get .8" more width and save 2.9lbs......tempting! I may try it out...just got to get the 17"x 8" wheels now......
