Question HELP!! 17x7.5 or 17x8.5 questin!!!

My question is I am debating on 17x7.5 or 17x8.5 on about a 2 inch lowered 2004 subaru wrx impreza sedan

on 7.5 width rim
what offset and tire width can be possible for widest stance without rubbing?
example: would a +42 and 225/45/17 rub on the fender

on 8.5 width rim
what offset and tire width can be possible for widest stand without rubbing?
example: Would a +42 235/45/17 definitely rub????

Main point is:
1.) debating on 7.5 or 8.5 width
2.) i want to lowest offset possible for each width without concerns off rubbing on fender or within chassis.
and
3.) what tire size for each width as well without rubbing on fender or inner chassis.

the 17x7.5 +42 will rub out back

17x8.5 +42 may or may not be fine - depends on the wheel, other suspension mods, etc.

it also depends on how the car has been lowered. with struts and lowering springs, you may have problems with the lower spring cup on the strut rubbing on the tire. with coilovers, a 235 tire should fit fine, and you might even be able to make use of a 245.

that simply is not true Luke - thats true if you are buying wheels through Tire Rack, but def. not universally true.

Actually come to think of it, you sell the SSR Comp's in a +45 for the Subaru...and they don't rub

on a 2004 Subaru WRX Impreza sedan on coilovers lowered 2 inches. with front adjustable camber plates

on 17x7.5 is +48 the lowest offset I can go?
and if so, what is the widest tire I can put on?

on a 17x8.5 will +48 rub or do i HAVE to go with +50?
and what is the widest tire i can go on this width rim with either +48 or +50

Please advise tire rack or anyone else
Thank you!

AWDrifter - no you don't have to go with the +48's, but it's a good general size combo

for 8.5's, it varies on the wheel and tire combo. Not all tires, even in the same size, are the same width - there can be huge variations in fact.

We've got plenty of customers in 8.5 inch +42 or +45 wheels (Work and Advan) lowered on coilovers, without rubbing at all.

some guys running 17x8.5 have been able to go as wide as a 255, depending on the make and model of the tire, running +50 to +52 i believe. some have had to roll fenders, others clear with no issues, it kinda depends on camber settings. most are able to fit 245s no problem. personally, i wouldn't try to go bigger than 245 with a +48 or +50 rim, 17x8.5 rim.

You got TireRack there with their offer of a +45 with a subaru, hehe
Well back to being serious.

Im planning on getting 17x7.5 or 17x8.5 Gram Lights 57S, I want the widest stance I can go, but choosing correct offset and tire size is my only concern. I do not want to rub on my lowered Sube.
Actually, I only think the 57S are only offering +30, +40, +48 and +50. ANyone else know if other offsets are available for the 57S
and
Z1,do you recommened any tire/offset combo for 7.5 or 8.5 ?

Thanx. TireRack, I am still open to your suggestions as well.

Thanx for your opinion, i will think about that size of 17x8.5 +50 with 245/40/17 or 245/45/17 ???
damn, now im too lazy to do calculations to see if overall diameter is the same, T T

the proper size for that wheel on a WRX is 17x7.5 +48 or 17x8.5 +50.

Proper tire size is 215/45/17 for the 7.5 and 225/45/17 for the 8l5. Does not mean you cannot go wide on the tires, but that is what is recommended as a guaranteed fitment.

Let me know if you need these, as we offer Volk's

Every place Ive looked recommends 225/45/17 for a 17x7.5. The factory od is 631.9 mm on a 205/55/16, a 225/45/17 od is 634.3mm (a difference of 2.4mm), and the od of a 215/45/17 is 625.3 mm (a difference of 6.6) so if you went with a 215/45 instead of a 225/45 your spedo wouldnt be as on the $. I have 225/45/17's on a 17x7.5 with a 48mm offset (1.2" drop) and when I was at -2 degrees of camber I had no rubing issues but now Im at -1 and my rear tires rub the fender when Im pushing hard in the corner so my next allignment will be back to factory specs in the rear (-1.5). AWD drifter 21, its not that time consuming to figure out the od of a tire. Here is a good explanation;https://www.i-club.com/forums/showth...hreadid=55297. 1"=25.4mm so a 17" rim is 431.8 mm.
