as long as you have all season tires, no. and if you dont' ahve all season tires get some
chains are not the best thing for a car and in california, if the roads get to the point where chains are required for 4wd vehicles, the roads will already be closed

i would check the legality of tire chains in your state as the law varies from state to state.
unless you're in the mountains where roads don't get plowed for a long period of time or have summer performance tires, you shouldn't need chains. just drive carefully when snow and ice are present. awd offers better grip, but you can slide just as much.

My manual (for Legacys and Outbacks) says to never put chains on my car. Don't remember the exact wording and reason, but check your manual.
In WA you used to have to carry chains Nov - Apr no matter what so I used to carry them even though I'd never use them, but now I think they've changed it so that 4WD/AWD don't have to carry them.

This is a great question! Living in California (Bay Area), sometimes, we make those trips to Nevada like Lake Tahoe or Reno for a fun time. Passing through the mountains there is snow or ice on the road.
Sometimes, on the road, when you are about to hit the high elevation mountains, the radio or some signs quickly say something like "Chains are required, please put some on"
Just to get some things clarify,
If I have all season tires, a subaru (wrx), can I drive on snowy roads or icy roads?(Yes or No only please)
This makes it a lot easier for everyone understand if there is a simple answer.
You know, i thought having four wheel drive avoided me from putting on chains when driving on icy or snowy roads.... (Is this wrong or a mis conception?)
Btw, Thanks for asking this question and maybe answering this one ^_^

I have chains, but if it ever gets to the point that I need to put them on, I'm headed off the roads asap.

so assuming we have to put chains on...would they go on the front or the back or not at all?
i agree with the comment where if chains are required, it's probably better to stay off the roads if you can.
