Tahoe/Reno Virgin.. Do I need chains?

I'm going to head up to Reno/Tahoe on Monday through Thursday. Looks like it will be snowing a bit on our way back to the bay area. I've never driven up there while it was snowing, but if we stay only on I-80, will chains be necessary? My friends and I are taking my car (MY02 WRX) and an Odessey.

Just trying to prepare for the worse. I've always remembered I-80 being plowed all the time, but I'm not sure.

Thanks!

they arent needed, but you can get them just in case. normally when the roads require us to use chains, its closed.

the first time i went up to tahoe i got stuck in a white out. the cops were stopping everyone to see if you had chains on. i actually got yelled at for asking a cop if i needed chains. he said to stop wasting his time.
eh go figure.

the mini van will need chains for sure though.
have fun in the snow!

As long as you have M+S rated tires, you should be fine. Drive slow, snow can be very tricky. Good luck and have fun!

as long as you have m+s tires, you are fine.

if you have never driven in snow or on icy roads, here is some advice my pops gave me when i was first learning to drive...

drive like you have eggs on all the pedals (between your foot and pedal) including the clutch. one of the best pieces of advice my dad ever gave me....

yes.

don't try summer tires without an M+S rating and chains, it really sucks.

No, I usually find most Tahoe/Reno virgins can be adequately restrained with ropes and at most handcuffs. Sacramento virgins on the other hand should be restrained with chains and leg irons, at the very least
