Lake Tahoe + snow +WRX = chains?
I'm planning on going up to Lake Tahoe next week and it might snow then. A friend at work told me that they would force you to use snowchains regardless or not you have all-wheel drive. Is this for real? Should I buy some?

When my family would go up to Tahoe we had a Suburban with M+S tires and 4WD. They never made us chain up at the controls, even when they made other cars do it.
I would take some chains with me though, just to be safe. And make sure you buy them down here. If you try up there you WILL get screwed.

I have driven up there twice in my WRX during a hard storm. Very fun and challenging. The first time I went up in winter 2001 the CHP were surprised I didn't have chains at a gas station. I told him it was a subaru and everything was Never carried chains nor did they check at the check point. Have fun, and drive carefully!
