BBS Wheels

Hi,

So I'm considering the optional BBS wheels that you can get through Subaru for my WRX. I know they are expensive, but I may do it anyway. But there are a couple of things I'd like to ask the board first.

1. According to my measurments the BBS wheel/tire combination may be about a pound or two heavier than the standard WRX wheel/tire combination. Can anyone confirm that? Or better yet, tell me I'm wrong?

2. Durability. How durable are the BBS wheels? I know this is an opinion question, but please, feel free to just tell me what you think. I live in New York City and am a little afraid of bending a rim. Or destroying a tire with a small sidewall. Also, how durable is the finish on these wheels?

3. In you opinon, how much harsher is the ride with the BBS wheel/tire combo? (When I say wheel/tire combo, I know the tires are not BBS, but Bridgestone Potenzas. I just mean to say the BBS option from Subaru). I know ride is a matter of taste, but any thoughts you
have would be greatly appreciated.

All my best and thanks,

David

Don't know about the optional but i have the BBS RGR's which are forged and look the same also.

I'd have to say they are pretty durable and i drive daily on crappy streets. It also probably depends on what series tires you are using. My other car with konigs on 16'' 40 series tires looked beat up after a couple of months.

I have had the RGR's for a few months on 17'' 45 series and they look fine. As far as the ride i can't tell because most of the other stuff i have done probably conrtibutes more.

You may want to look into the BBS RGR's. I also liked the optional BBS wheels. Then a few months ago BBS released the RGR's. Look almost the same. They are forged also and are about 1000 dollars cheaper.

Thanks to you both! Do you know the weight?

Thanks both of you!

Rallysubie - those RGR's, do you know how much do they weigh with the tires attached? And if so, are they lighter than the standard wheels?

Thanks for your help. I'm definitely not buying the optional wheels from Subaru, I've come to my senses! Maybe those RGR's though...

Weight with tires will vary depending on what tires you get. I went with the Toyo tires. I believe they are one of the lighter tires out there. About 22lbs each. The weight of the RGR's are roughly as light as the stock wheels or lighter. But they are also a lot bigger. 17x7.5.

The weight and word forged is actually stamped on the outer lips of the wheels (so everbody who gets a close look nows how serious these rims are). They are stamped 6.9 kg (~15lb).

And at 7.5 on the width you don't have any problems with rubbing?

By the way, according to Subaru Corporate the standard wheels are 14lbs. So those RGRs are only about one pound heavier, which isn't significant I don't think.

Thanks again for all your info. I love this dang web-site.

Never had a problem with them rubbing. I actually have my car dropped an inch with Tein Flex coilovers. Even with people in the car i have not had any noticeable problems. By the way i am also using 225 45 size tires.

Tire Rack i believe is selling them now for about 1800 for a set.

These forums are great.

Dhutty,

Sorry about the delay - I didn't see your post. The two 17" BBS wheels listed to fit your car are the RGR and the RK and both fit beautifully. The RGR is 17x7.5 with offset 48 and weighs 17.5 lbs. The RK is 17x7 with offset 48 and weighs about 17.5 lbs. also. Damage on the RGR is currently $439 and RK $269. We'll guarantee the fit on both with 225 width tires.

We have the OE wheel listed at 16.5lbs.

Take a look here for plenty of tire and wheel info. I'll keep an eye on the thread if you have any more questions.

I am just curious where the 17.5lb number is coming from. The wheels say 6.9kg (1kg=2.2lb). That is roughly 15lbs.

Rally,

Our specialist is out today so I can't get his take on it, but the weights we give are obtained 'in house.' We drop it on a scale and write it down. The scale is accurate - it's likely the the cast (or forged)-in weight is obtained prior to painting/finishing and without center cap. It also might be a general weight of a certain offset - and with the higher offset more metal is required to maintain strength.
