I recently got an 02 wagon, which still has the original RE92s on it (!). After about 3 weeks, its clear that they will not last much longer with me driving it, its time for new tires and maybe new wheels. My first thought was to put some 17" SSRs on there, but after further consideration, 16 inch wheels are sounding better and better to me.

Pros:

- wheels weigh less.
- weight is closer to the hub so less moment of inertia == more acceleration.
- less prone to denting from potholes, rallycross.
- probably as much grip as 17s.
- ride is better.
- tires are a lot cheaper.
- wheels are cheaper.

Cons:

- less 'road feel' than 17s
- car is a bit less agile than with 17s.
- decreased bling factor.

So, am I missing anything here? It seems like not many people on this board are going for the 16 inch option, so I'm inclined to ask about this... is the handling really improved that much by going with a shorter sidewall? For me, this car is not about being the best possible tarmac car, its a little more of a versatile all-rounder, with occasional forays onto dirt (nothing too serious though), so I don't want to lose out on that aspect.

 

most ppl change rims because of the look, thats why they go for the 17"s. however, the "road feel" and the sidewall flex is a significant improvement on the 17"S, other wise 16"s definitely has the advantage performance wise(thats if u dont change ur brakes).

 

Weigh less? 17x7.5" SSRs weigh about 12 pounds dude. Go with the 17s. In terms of handling, all the advantages go to 17" wheels given the same tire. Cost isn't significantly higher. If you rallycross, I'd get a set of snow tires to toss on the stock wheels. Then you also have a just-in-case set for ski trips or whatever. snow tires are good for rally cross if you aren't running real rally tires.
