Have had noise problem diagnosed by two mechanics, one a former Subaru Exec, they both agree that the engine is going bad. Has a loud knock when cold, doesn't always go away, it's my daughter's car and I don't want any aggravation with winter coming on.

I'm looking for a recon Japanese engine, or a new Japanese or American. I don't care if it's a newer engine, STI, WRX or 2.5 or whatever, so long as it's not any smaller than the one in there now, which may be a 98 2.5 Liter.

If anyone has any info, please let me know ASAP.
