Tuner kit
I was watching a video of the 2006 WRX on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8224wdF9Rw
it says you can get a tuner kit to make the wrx faster than an sti for a lot less money. Does anyone know what they are talking about? Is it just a tune or some kind of package of parts you have to get? If I can get something like that for say around 1g, I will definately plan on getting the new wrx over the new ralliart, legacy, or MS6 in the next year or two...

OK first I have to say what a rip off "The Rig" as from Top Gear's "The Stig."
Plus that guy looked like some surfer kid.
I've never heard of a Tuner kit from Subaru. But you could always make one for yourself.
Most people buy:
Cobb AccessPort V.1: $350-450 used ( or the V.2 for 699 new)
Downpipe: $200-400( if not cheaper)
up-pipe: free-$250 ( I say free cause the 06's have a catless up-pipe so no real need to buy one)
It's not that much less money when you compare things like the STi 6sp, Brembos, wheels/tires, DCCD, etc. But hey get what you want.

Faster than an STi, probably. I mean, MSRP difference is 8.5k, that's a lot of money to go into "go fast" parts.
However, you don't get the same reliability as you would with the STi. Such as an almost bullet proof gear box (which the Subaru USA Rally team uses instead of a custom one), DCCD, better axles, improved suspension, different interior, exterior stuff such as HIDs, the wing, etc. Plus you keep the factory warranty.
It really depends on how you look at it. People can go buy a old beater car and mod it up the wazoo to be faster than many road cars for much less money. However, sometimes, just having a car that was built to be that fast in the first place is much better than driving one that was pushed to its limits.

My intentions are to have a reliable daily driver with only occasional "going fast" times. I would be happy with around 300 hp if I could do it without major mods and still be under warranty. I also don't want to attract undo attention from the authorities. I also plan on keeping my next car for a long time and of course get something not overly expensive, with minimal maintance costs and reasonable insurace rates. Right now I'm thinking the wrx with the cobb stage 1 or 2, with maybe a down pipe and cat-back would fit the bill. This is also assuming the next wrx will be as good as or better than the present one. Do these expectations seem reasonable at the present time?
