C'etait un Rendezvous. Filmed by Claude LaLouche, the director of the Oscar winning film A Man and a Woman. The legend goes that he had rented the equipment to make another film from a french government agency that sponsored the arts. He had to return the equipment on Monday. The car may have been a 275 GTB he bought with money he made from A Man and a Woman. He strapped a gyro stabilized camera mount (then a brand new piece of equipment the camera used only held 10 minutes of film)to the hood of the car and on a Sunday morning in August, 1976 when when most of europe including Paris, is away on holiday, blasted from a start near the Arc d Triomphe , threaded the needle of the gates of the Louvre and on to the parking lot of the Basilique Sacre Couer at the top of Montmarte.
The legend that when the film first screened, LeLouche was called to appear in the office of the chief of police for Paris. He did. The chief demanded his license. LeLouche removed it from his wallet and handed it across the desk. The chief said "they told me to take away your license. They did not tell me what to do after that." Whereupon he handed it back to Lelouch.
Lelouche claimed it was an F1 driver but has refused to name him.
I first saw it listed in Classic Motor Books, back in the 80's for a touch over $100.00. I demured. There were better things I could do with that in college, and I heard it was a bad pirated print. Spirit Level has it for about $30.00 on their website. It makes Bullit or most anything look pathetic. The only thing that ever came close, for me, was a chase scene with James Woods and Jeff Bridges in a 308 gts and Carrera Cabriolet. I forget the name of the movie, but that was cut and blocked and edited vdery well.
This is one single uncut no FX live shot. The film was not sped up. Who ever is driving is a master. There is nothing like open road driving. No closed course offers the same challengs. This guy is perfect. On the DVD you hear each shift. You see the anticipation of traffic approached and pedestrians. Solberg is good. Andretti is in the Pantheon, Fangio, Moss, Stewart too, this guy. . . .
Well that's what I learned over 20 years. Buy the DVD, support the dieing art of flim making. This has been like talking about sex. So, if you will excuse me, I have to watch a movie

nissan filmed a very similar piece a few years ago promoting the new
350z. it was called 'the run', and they ran a 350z through the streets
of prague early in the morning. the dvd was distributed free as swag
at auto shows and other events. they show how they had to close off
streets for an hour to film it. i'm sure they closed off parts of paris for
this shoot. there's no way you could do that at any hour without some
sort of unexpected occurence. no way.

No. 30 years ago was a different world.
IIRC about that time Automobile did a bit on Rendezvous and later, a more extensinve piece on the 350Z video. The police involvement and the popularity of "Getaway" almost killled the 350 Z thing.
