yea I think it like that in most of the poor countries, when I went to Cambodia two years back, I was amazed, the downtown area was like a free for all, with cars(80% Camrys),scooters/motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians going every which way. when there was some sort of flow of traffic. lets say i dunno some what of a one way street goin north, BAM ! you got like 1 dumbass goin south against traffic. dense traffic at that. and on top of that I swear to you, the whole two weeks I was there, Never saw a car accident or a messed up car. like how we have like not yet painted hoods, or tape over taillights, plastic covering broken window, worst accident was some drunk guy driving a scooter drove into a river lol.

This works because 1, they are going slow, and 2 (and most importantly) they have an awareness of other people around them that most American's have absolutely none of.
Try walking in the crowded streets in asia (China, Japan, Korea, etc). Why don't they bump into each other even with the insane crowds? Because they don't have the attitude that "I'm the only one on the road/sidewalk".
With all the people around here driving (and walking) like they own the entire world and no one else exists, it's no wonder we'd have more accidents under those conditions.
