hi, my question is that i read somewhere that the fully closed blocks have a tendency to overheat, where as the semi-open blocks can cool better, but the fully closed decks can hold more power. i'm just wondering if you can further explain this. also, with a stage 5 motor, why would you consider it "race only"? if it's the same block as the usdm sti 2.5L, would it be ok to use it as a daily driver too?

Sorry about the delay.

The closed deck blocks due tend to run somewhat hotter, but you can remedy this by running a slightly cooler thermostat.
Another issue that I sort of take for granted is using an upgraded radiator. I would hope that if someone is spending this amount of money for a block, that they would already have an upgraded radiator or plan on purchasing one before install.

I call the stg 5 motor "race only" because the type of sleeves that are used in these engines due make a little noise and sometimes have a tendency to burn a little oil. The noise isn't too bad, but it's not stock quite.
Oil consumption is usually less than 1 qrt for every 4-5000 miles. The reason for oil use is because I run a piston to wall clearance of .0035 to allow the piston to swell when under extreme duty. I assume the engine is going to be used to make at least 500hp, so I have to compromise somewhere and that place is piston clearance. The downside to that is slight piston noise and some oil use.

Ron

Ron,

Being that my car is in storage, could you gimme a quote on this?

If you could work on a set of 2.0 heads, for the core refund I've got WRX heads that I'll give you once I get home (should be ~SEP 04). I'd like to get them ported with the upgraded valvetrain (dual springs), and either the STI or 264 JUN cams.

Once I get home, say around 1 SEP, my car will be on a ship for about a month, enroute to western Indiana so I should be able to get the heads to you by early October.

Thanks
