No its not. Now if you use your ethnocentrism as a grounds to dismiss anothers views well thats your choice. But I still hear more liberals taking stabs at conservatives because they are white. Like you just did.

http://dictionary.reference.com/sear...=ethnocentrism

Belief in the superiority of one's own ethnic group.
Overriding concern with race.

I think maybe you misunderstand Oaf. Its funny that they were affraid of the chopper but may have been intelligent enough to hightail it when all of the animals around them headed for the hills.

No, I think it's friggin' hilarious that some White European would make the comment of "...using age-old early warning systems."

Seems rather, well, snotty, to me.

I hope that is what Oaf meant by that. It's a great example of what I'm talking about though...in our society, we'd run from the chopper but not from the giant wave...don't you think those people would think we were 'ignorant' for not getting out of the way of a giant *** wave?

There ya go, you got it... start off your post by pointing out a typo, a firm basis for the rest of what you had to say... I didn't even have a chance to correct it, seeing that I was locked from the thread (for a reason unknown to me)
very soon after that post.

And how exactly does trying to see the world from someone else's view pit people against each other? The only way there could be conflict is if one side refused to step outside their box.

I'll admit, it is a very tough thing to do, and until I took a cultural anthropology course, I had a tough time doing this myself.

So, I guess if you were on vacation there, you would have been one of the idiots who ran out on the beach when the tide receeded.

You say funny, I say ingenious.

Would it have been less funny if they all drowned?

I guess this is where we differ.

The second definition (which I posted originally) applies more aptly to this argument
basically, it is considering issues pertaining to other cutures and societies, and applying your own cultural pretext to the issue... for example:

People who live on some remote, isolated pacific island may see our own lifestyle as silly. They may think, why do we go to work? But to us, that's a 'stupid' question. They may also fail to see the point of violent games like football, and may deem us as 'uncivilized.' On that note, it has alot to do with your definition of 'civilized.' If you see only one way of life as the most advanced, you will probably think less of other cultures that you see as less civilized.

The failure to realize that other ways of life are in many ways the same as, and even better than our own is what leads to ethnocentrism.

(Sorry, Salty, did I go beyond my word allowance?)

My argument with you was not the definition but the application of the word as it relates to your argument against conservatives.

Okay, I was a little hasty in my replies after Salty let me out of 'time-out', but I still dont get it-

How is that snotty? What should they have said?

I'll apologize, if that means anything, but you should have expected your original comment to be misunderstood.

Scoob, dont apologize. Calling a tribal islander an idiot for acting like a tribal islander is, well, idiotic.

Im with you though... I dont get their illogical reasoning on how it is "snotty" (whatever the hell that means--"snooty" perhaps?) to point out a seemingly astute response on the islander's reaction to the incoming wave

Okay...it's obvious you folks need to be spoon fed.

I was making fun of the stoooopid officials, not the natives.

In reading the statement, the officials come across as being snooty, which can be loosely translated as "condescending", for....

Oh, nevermind...you either understand me or you don't.

Age old warning system =Sense of sight+Sense of hearing+Big wave<Run

I'd also have to point out that in the pic they're all wearing western clothing(no leaf undies or saggy ****) so I'm sure they know what a helicopter is. Especially an Indian helicopter.
