Why idiots? By the articles own reasoning, It seems that they tribal folks faired quite well relative to the mroe modern people who had no clue as to what was about to happen. So, perhaps, they don't understand why these helicopters are coming to their islands? Maybe they're thinking, "They're finally coming to take our land" ... and see no connection to the quake and tsunami.
There's a lot of conjecture there, but it seems highly resonable. To people in their state, who aren't used to having helicopters and relief aid dropped from the sky, why would they make such a connection?

I don't get it... you still think they're idiots?
eth·no·cen·trism: n.
The tendency to evaluate other groups according to the values and standards of one's own ethnic group, especially with the conviction that one's own ethnic group is superior to the other groups.

BTW, I think the religious right (you included) has missed the boat as far as understanding this term (ethnoicentrism) and the flaws in that way of thinking.
I feel that this is the basis for the rift between the two parties, and, as a result of the difference in understanding, the Left feels like they are more 'worldly' and 'well-informed,' allowing the right to dub them as 'elitist.' IMO, this is why Bush dominated the more rural, unincorporated (less-worldly informed) more isolated areas of the country, and Kerry was able to take the large population centers, where world-awareness may be greater (due to television, wide ranges of ethnicities, etc.)
To any republican out there... If you can do a little reading on this term, I think that would help you immensely in understanding the views on the other side.
If you continue to exhibit your lack of understanding of this term, and fail to realize and accept it's flaws, expect posts like Salty's first one of this thread to be called ignorant, and continue wearing that American Flag blindfold.

I posted this thread because people were shooting sticks at a steel beast in the sky. That was the idiot part I was referring to just to maybe get a laugh form a bitter bunch. Instead, I get words you've run though an internet thesaurus which is pretty weak.
Get off your elitist, milliondollar word soapbox, scoobsport98. Nobody cares!
Now go ahead and make a smart comment about how you made such a valid point and how Salty buckled under the pressure. It’s a massive OD green beast in the sky made of steel and rivets in which people are shooting arrows at, not a UN issue. Get over it!

You mean 'ethnocentrism'? I believe thats just what liberal politicians want people to believe, its a way of pitting people against eachother. Here is an example, I was at a party and I was explaining my view on guns to one of my Chicano freinds and he looked me dead in the face and said "Thats funny you don't look white.". So that was not ethnocentrism? Ethnocentrism is not why many minorities vote democrat? You'll be laughed at if your a minority and you vote Republican. But hey if you buy into that condecending BS then thats your problem.

Did you happen to notice that the writer and those quoted tried to emphasize that the point was not the attack, but the sign of life?

I'm unlocking this thread so scoobsport98 can make himself feel better and so constellation can make another personal, ignorant attack on my life.
I don't need this anymore... I’m throwing in the towel with this forum because it's too hard to keep afloat.

For what it's worth, Salty, I find this very funny.
"Officials believe they survived the devastation by using age-old early warning systems.
They might have run to high ground for safety after noticing changes in the behaviour of birds and marine wildlife."

Ethnocentrism is ingnoring other people's view points that differ from your own. All conservatives love doing this because it looks patriotic. For example, the fact that Oaf thinks the above quote is funny.
Salty, I see that you meant this thread as some light hearted fun. But some valid points have been made. It's not idiotic or ignorant of the people over there to shoot at a helicopter. They just aren't exposed to that type of thing. Just like you were obviously never exposed to someone who didn't give in to all your arguments. So they shoot arrows at the heli...you shoot insults at the people who don't agree.
