Nonsense, every American citizen is entitled to free health care, free college eduation, cost of living assistance and government housing. Right?

I do -- if Bush proposed this, you would call it slavery, and rightly so, because that's what it is.

I'd go kicking and screaming if I got put into this socialist crap.
You'd go kicking and screaming for 50 hours of community service? really? I guess I really never thought of it like you guys are. When I was in high school I did around 85 hours of voluntary community service for Habitat and it was an unbelievable experience, and there have been others over the years. I guess I can see where that could have been a different experience if I was forced into it, but I have been down that road as well in my youth and I still think I gained a lot from that experience also.

No, I wouldn't have because I am not the sensationalist that some people are. I also am not the extremely anti-bush type like some are. I disagreed with much of what he did but I think he was doing what he thought was best for the country at the time.

Sure. Entitled the same way I am entitled to pick your pocket and take $20 out of your wallet for my lunch. (Sorry if this was meant as a sarcastic remark.)

The difference is that it was Voluntary. Conscription for service is basically Slavery. And while congress can technically draft Men ages 18-28 for Military service, drafting people for community service would be a 13th amendment violation. (Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. )

Yes I do believe that all persons in the US should do community service of some type.. I also believe that Military service should be more widespread than it is. I would even go as far as to say that Military service (or at least a similar civil service) should be a requirement in order run for National Office, but I making the jump into mandatory public/community service strikes me as Statism and borders on Tyranny.

Absolutely I would. My patriotism is not in question. I have served in the U.S. Army since before my 18th birthday, re-uped, went to college and got a degree (two actually) just so I could get my commission. Volunteered for duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. The operative word here for me is "volunteered". I have no problem giving my life, beit physically or just sacrificing time away from home and my family for the greater good of this nation but I want to do it on my own accord. A day my come when I say "that's enough", and I walk away from this (I don't foresee that but just in case) I'd like to think my country would be grateful for my service and not say "wait, that's not enough".

I hope you didn't think that I was in any way questioning your patriotism, because that was definitely not my intent. I have nothing but respect for what you do and what every service member does.

I just think I never really looked at it like you do in regards to this topic. I deal with kids just out of high school every day and the majority think that they can have whatever they want without doing a damn bit of work to get it. It's not how I was raised and it is not how I am raising my son.

I may be wrong about this, I just want to see a change in the youth of this country.

As do I, but I refuse to allow the gov't to "raise" my children or anyone elses.

Turn off the tv.
Limit video games.
Get 'em outside.
Go to a museum, park, ballet, etc.

I didn't think you were questioning me I just don't think the government should question my intentions either. I definitely see today's youth changing but I will see that the world and public in general will judge them in due time. Those who lack a sound moral base and good work ethic are only doing themselves a disservice and they'll pay dearly for it eventually. But like Paul said, I don't want the government teaching my kids how to live, that's my job and I can do it better than they can. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the governments job is to protect me from you, not me from myself. Every person is accountable for his or her own actions end of story.

Don't forget:

Talk to them.
Help them with their problems.
And most importantly - BE THERE FOR THEM.

Even something as simple as family dinner every night to talk about the day will bring parents and children that much closer.

I suppose that if we were to follow the same lines of logic, JFK was a socialist as well. I hear he was real buddy buddy with Castro.

The word "socialism" is being thrown around alot lately. A few of you might want to do some research on countries that have used it and not just look up the dictionary.com definition and consider it fascist.

Also, high schools already require community service for senior to graduate. (8 hours). So I don't really see what the big deal is. I think it could be very helpful in some parts of our country where kids have nothing to do after school but get in trouble.
