Regardless if Gore purchases his power from a green source, the same grid is feeding his home. Green power would be who gets his money. He would not be in effect, reducing emmissions from non-green supplier.
This is simialr to what we have here in CA. It is the basis of a deregulated market. You can purchase you power from anyone who supplies PG&E's grid. Energy is traded, bought and sold in a way to benefit the supplier.
By the looks of thing GOre is a hypocrite. What makes me laugh is he doesn't even realize it. I have no doubt that he has a passion for this save the planet thing. It's not like it is 100% green power anyways. They just mix in the Green power with the rest of the power grid.
Really the only way to "reduce your carbon footprint" is to not own a 10,000 sq foot house.

I mean who really needs that much house?

Look 100% of my electricity comes form green/alternate sources... and I pay dearly for that choice ($$$)! But, my statement from last year shows because I have made the choice (that yes, I have to use electricity... so, I will not pollute while doing it). My personal consumption saved the equivalent of 100 cars burning pollutants for 10,000 miles each just last year. Will it stop 'global warming'? No. But, I sleep well at night knowing I am NOT making it ANY worse for my children!
Green power is in it's infancy. The only way to recuce national carbon footprint is to ban the building of nongreen sources of energy from this day forward. The problem with this is that green energy can not produce enough to offset the increase in demand. As long as the demand continues to increase at an alarming rate, fossil fuel will have to be used to maintain stability of the grid. Green power is being brought to attention as if it is something that can happen now. This is so far from the truth. It is something that we can strive for, but in no way is it something that should be on top of your priority list.

Actually, I'm curious how you came to the conclusion of your figures. What kind of cars? Were they driving uphill? Are they in traffic? What sort of fuel? How many BTU's does a total of 100 cars for 10000miles consume. What did you figure for the BTU's to Kilowatt hours.
I call BS here until you can show me the math. See the conversion is much more complicated. Frankly, unless you are in the industry you wouldn't even know where to begin.

I'm for it just to tell the Man to **** off.
The house will use a lot of recycled/pre cycled materials.
I will use hydro, wind, and solar electric, install a gray water system, and use more rain water to irrigate my garden.
But back to Occidental Petroleum.....

Despite his public reputation as a staunch environmentalist, Gore recommended that the president approve giving oil companies access to this publicly owned land. It is land that the U.S. Navy has held as emergency reserves since 1912. In October, 1997, the Energy Department announced that the government would sell 47,000 acres of the Elk Hills reserve to Occidental.
It was the largest privatization of federal property in U.S. history, one that tripled Occidental's U.S. oil reserves overnight. Although the Energy Department was required to assess the likely environmental consequences of the proposed sale, it didn't. Instead it hired a private company, ICF Kaiser International, Incorporated, to complete the assessment. The general chairman of Gore's presidential campaign, Tony Coelho, sat on the board of directors.
The very same day the Elk Hills sale was announced, Gore delivered a speech to the White House Conference on Climate Change on the "terrifying prospect" of global warming, a problem he blamed on the unchecked use of fossil fuels such as oil. He said, quoting, "If we ignore the scientific warnings and continue stubbornly on our current course, we better begin to prepare what we would like to say to our children and grandchildren. They might fairly ask, if you knew all that, why didn't you do something about it?"
Al Gore sold public land...land that my ****ing tax dollars support....to put more money into his pocket.

How do expect me to believe that Al Gore gives a **** about the environment and/or global warming when he directly profits from petroleum consumption!?!?!
