Why do I picture a cowboy-type person suggesting this plan just before spitting his tobacco juice. I think it's a good plan... I just don't think there's anyway to execute it effectively and efficiently.
And btw, just because I link to my blog doesn't mean I want you to post there. You can comment here for all I care. I link because it's easier and because I don't want dual content floating around via cut and paste.

lame. if they own the land, then I suppose they would be entitled to do this. even if they could foot the bill for the labor and materials, the taxpayers would end up covering extraneous costs.
I believe that the fence issue is a moot terrorist issue. it aint hard to either sneak into or smuggle yourself into this country from either seaboard or the north.

Conversely, how much would our economy suffer? CA benefits the most from illegal labor. That state's economy hinges--specifically the hospitality, construction, and farming industries-- on the contribution of migrant labor.

There already is a wall from the coast of CA to way out in the desert. People have made over 40 tunnels under it already, that we know of, and use them to go to SD. Why do you think a wall works when there IS one in some places and people just go under it? Pure ignorance? A love affair for masonry?

Masonry position!?
Fence = stupid idea.
Use electronic means to survail the boarder & use the Boarder patrol and military to capture the criminals sneaking across.

While I agree that illegal immigrants are a huge drain on our medical and educational systems, among others, ignoring their contributions to our own economy is purely ignorant. Even the president acknoledges and points out the myriad ways illegals are artificially boosting our economy. There is a huge problem, and the reason it's difficult to fix is that both 'sides' (the illegals and the US citizens) are both reliant on the lack of immigration control for our general well being.
That being said, there are a lot of good ideas on how to start alleviating the problem. Paul's idea about increased surveilance and military border control make perfect sense; noone can argue that stopping people from coming in illegally is a bad idea. If a plan like that is implemented efficiently, then the question becomes what to do with the illegals that are here. We all have agreed that shipping them away is a bad idea; I would suggest giving them the opportunity to become citizens. This brings up the 'incentive to come' idea; to which I suggest that we increase the number of legal immigrants allowed in once we know that there won't be any illegals coming across the border as well as providing crippling punishments for Americans who employ illegals.
1)Close border with technological and military supremacy (which we obviously have).
2)Increase quotas for immigrants from 3rd world countries.
3)Slowely legalize (and more importantly document) illegals which are here.
4)Make rediculously large punishments for employers hiring illegals; send IRS people INTO THE FIELD RANDOMLY to check
This plan has concessions from and to both 'sides' of the debate and results in a controlable imigration situation.
