so, will this effect the amount of alcohol consumed?

lets say no: people will spend more on alcohol and less on other areas and the economy will suffer in those areas. Also, as they are dealing with less money for other activities, they will become depressed and drink more, putthing them in a worse position. Also, people will continue to drink their pepsi and cokes, but the extra money spent on that will no longer be available for gym fees, only adding to the obeseness they have.

lets say yes: people who depend on alcohol sales for a living will be hurting financially. Less people will be drinking, so less DUIs will happen. This will make driving safer yes, but the revenue the state will see will decrease and that will mean that layoffs may happen. Overall, jobs will be lost and incomes will be hurt due to the decreased purchase of alcohol and soda products.
That's a little over generalized...We are talking about a $0.50 hike here...not enough to say people 'stop spending money in other areas of the economy'.

My guess? This will have a minimal, if any, effect on the economy as a whole.

I wonder how much a beer will cost at a Giants game now? 15.00 for a 10oz. :)

legalize pot, problem solved?

AntiochCali 05-21-2009 11:46 AM

Hmmm, it seems to me the only way to tax fairly is to tax evenly (as a % is fairest IMHO) - I hate the sin taxes, no I'm not a big drinker and I don't smoke, but it seems that everyone should pay more-or-less evenly into the system for fairness.

Paul, I think everyone should be entitled to health care...it makes me sick when I see someones family torn up for medical care costs - my sister lost her home and her job and has insane debt due to cancer...she wasn't poor enough to qualify for any govt programs and certainly wasn't rich enough to pay for them herself. Her work fired her when they found out she had cancer, bet you didn't know that's legal. This kind of thing seems unreasonable to me in a modern society, just like everyone pays for everyone elses kids education, everyone should pay for health care.

$8.75 with a souvenir cup. $7.00 regular. So just add $0.20-0.30.
legalize pot, problem solved?
Not that simple. We've discussed it.

VRT Gump 05-21-2009 12:10 PM

yeah, add .20-.30 cents for their costs. doesnt mean .20-.30 cents to us because you know they need to make their money :)

and legalizing pot would stimulate huge amounts of income and jobs throughout the US. There are a lot of side effects, but the only ones that would really be losing out is the drug dealers, and honetly they can go drive off a short bridge.

R-Dub 05-21-2009 12:38 PM

Ok..so we "legalize" it and tax it. Well what is to stop people from just growing it at home? Do they have to pay the tax? How do tell who is growing how much?

After a few years then, what happens if the government wants to raise taxes to the point where it essentially becomes illegal again? Which is the trouble that faced us a few years ago - cannabis cultivation itself wasn't illegal - it was just taxed so heavily that you had to pay an exorbitant fee to cultivate.

That is the problem with trying to tax the plant - you run into these problems that still gives the government the ability to put the screws on the people. That is why I firmly believe that the only way to go about it is making it 100% free but REGULATED.

Yeah and look what happened! They increased the tax almost triplicate!

And Paul - I agree. I like to be able to choose my own Dr., specialists, hospital and coverage - I don't want the government to dictate any of that.
The bigger issue is why people keep looking to the gov't, rather to themselves, for a solution?
But wouldn't you say there is a fundamental flaw in the system when millions of hard working middle class Americans simply cannot afford health care? If we were talking about homeless people or the perpetually unemployed I could agree with you. The problem is that the people who get ****ed under the present system are those who are not rich enough to afford health care, and not poor enough to get governmental assistance under preexisting programs. They are the hard working people who you and I both need for our businesses to succeed. When someone works their ass off ten to twelve hours a day and still cannot provide health care for their children, IMO it shows there is a problem in the system.

Traxamillion 05-21-2009 01:42 PM

here you go free healthcare and stuff.. no it's not free with higher taxes.

healthcare is a responsibility the govr shouldn't have any say... states like cali cant even operate there's, how is the federal govr gona do any better? tax the hell out of you! big govr is bad government! govr is not the solution it's the problem!
