Awesome article on Afghanistan
This is an awesome article and nothing really political. A great insight into what an 11B gets paid to do. An example of a text-book ambush (except for the selector switch not being on fire). And the picture on the front of the article, strikingly beautiful.

Nice!
He should've answered the call.
Specialist Robert C. Oxman, 21, had put a dead fighter’s phone in his pocket. As the platoon descended, the phone rang and rang, apparently as other fighters called to find out what had happened on Sautalu Sar. By sunrise, it had been ringing for hours.

Awesome news article. The media actually printed a good no BS story for once.
At first I thought those guys were Marines in woodland MARPAT. Their uniforms look darker than normal army ACUs for some reason.

Lieutenant Smith called the listening post back in. After two Apache attack helicopters showed up, an F-15 dropped a bomb on the Taliban’s escape route, about 600 yards up the trail. Then the lieutenant ordered teams to search the bodies they could find on the crest.

Team = ~4 soldiers
Squad = 2X Team = ~8 soldiers
Platoon = 4X Squad = ~36 soldiers
Company = 4X Platoon = ~144 soldiers
Battalion = 4X Company = ~576 soldiers
Brigade = 4X Battalion = ~2300 soldiers
Division = 4X Brigade = ~ 9200 soldiers
Buuuut....
Starting at the Company level, one unit below is kept on "reserve" status.
Meaning: Company only had 3 active platoons, one was with the local reserve outfit.
At least this was how it was with the 9th Infantry Division.

And 600m is real close for a JDAM. 600m is actually considered dangerous close even for 120mm mortar and 155mm artillery fire. In mountains though the terrain often provides defilade.
