I know that there is a new updated bearing that is a roller ball bearing instead of a thrust bearing. You need a thick grease for packing the bearing together and there are three rings for the reinstall process.

BTW, what are your symptoms or needs for replacing the bearings?

But in the latest issue of SCC they said that you won't feel much play and that it wasn't a good way to tell if the bearing was munched.
I don't have a WRX or know a better way of checking for a bad wheel bearing. All I know is, when mine went in my '98 Snai"L" it made this awful grinding sound. I jacked it up, grabbed the top and bottom of the tire and shook it in and out. Free play was evident and I replaced the wheel bearing. I don't know the name of the ring that holds the bearings, but that had been sheared in two. In my case the old way of shaking the wheel worked just fine and you could definitely notice play.
