Impact gun, but make sure you have the spring compressed. Springs can be deadly if not compressed well.

use a bigger breaker bar (pipe) and spray some WD-40.

When I did mine, I didn't have a Impact Gun, or Open head 17mm Wrench thats bent to fit that angle, so what I did was, pull the boot/sleeve that is over the rod on the strut, Gripped that freakin' rod real hard and loosen the 17mm up top.. it's the only way I could get it loose.. Imagine how tired I was after.. lol

If you don't have an impact wrench just grind flats on the side of a socket and operate it with an open end wrench. Insert your allen wrench through the now open top of the socket. works fine. Like the man said remember to have a spring compressor installed.

Not to spoil anything, but uh.. spring compressor, not needed for my springs, 05 Impreza GD6.. the spring rate isn't that high. That idea of grinding the socket sounds really good, too bad I didnt have a sander with me that day.. damn..

best of luck

watch out, I've seen someone snap the stud off the top of the strut from over-spinning the nut with an impact gun.

The Gear Ratchet is the only way to go.

There is no difference between how much pressure or hold back force is on the bolt if it's in the car or off. So it would be no better or worse. You could remove the bolt then put it back on enough threads though I suppose before removing the suspension as a unit. Still, the risk of denting or messing up the paint on the fender with your tools is higher if you do that I guess.

Hey MikeDiswhoiBe, I did exactly what your talking about last Saturday when I changed to Cusco plates up front, but I really just cracked the nut loose I didn't unscrew it. Anyway it worked alot better this way then after the strut was out of the car. Also for me it was alot easier with an extra set of hands to steady the struts while out of the car. Hope this helps.

Cheers
