Stoptech or Cobb Tuning stage 2 brakes?
Stoptech or Cobb Tuning stage 2 brakes?
Hello all,
Looking to upgrade to new rotors -- slotted, or solid...don't want cross-drilled.
Looking to get new lines, I figure the Goodridge ones are fine.
Looking to get new pads...street, occasional auto-x, and lots of highway.
So here's what I came up with. Has anyone had any experience, with either set?
Let me know how ya like 'em?
Here's the links
Coob Tuning Stage 2 brake kit...
or
Stoptech Stage 2 Brake Kit
Stage 2 brake upgrade, Subaru WRX 2002, includes StopTech stainless steel brake lines for front and rear, 3 bottles of Motul 600 brake fluid, Axxis Ultimate pads for front and rear, StopTech slotted front and rear stock-sized rotors. FITS STOCK CALIPERS.
$499.00 - Item No. 86-836-4324
They both seem like a worthwhile purchase, just would like some feedback, if anyone has/had used EITHER of these systems? Which would be the better pick here? Decisions, decisions...
Later,
i.

I agree...
however, if you look at each set of components, they differ. Are the rotors in the stoptech kit, from stoptech cryogenically treated?
The pads, I assume, are different. Each has their own 'tested' lines, and the fluid, well, each fluid had it's own properties.
As far as the 'flash' factor is concerned, that doesn't make much sense to me, when it comes down to brakes. I want the car to stop...period. 'Pretty' brakes aren't any better than the 'ugly' looking brakes...but how each of them perform is what wins in the arena.
Anyway, thanks man, for the input. I always appreciate a knowledgeable answer.
I guess I will go with the stoptech kit, after researching the options...it seems to be the best, and most cost effective, even though the dollar difference per kit is only 15 - 20 bucks. I also figure that I might as well replace all 4 rotors, even if they don't need to be replaced, at the same point, if I am gonna do everything else, so the stoptech package seems to work well.

I just received my stoptech kit....
and it's pretty nice, as far as looks go.
We shall see how performance goes, once they are on in a few days.
Will let ya know how they work out!

I have the Cobb Stage II brakes and they are better than stock. The initial bite is better. The fronts dust like crazy though. Don't get them if you don't want to wash your front wheels once a week. They are covered pretty good after just 5 runs at an auto-x. I assume the cyro treating is going to make the rotors last longer. I've only had the brakes for a year so we will see later.
Stoptech has a great rep. I would be comfortable with anything they sell.
The main problems with the WRX brakes are:
1. The ABS system is (sometimes) terrible for auto-x. Hit a bump or a slick spot and you are going to loose 50% of your braking power for several seconds.
2. It is too front biased
The only thing you can do to improve the ABS is to pull the fuse or install a switch. At that point you better know how to modulate your braking so you don't lock them up.
I think the Stoptech big brake kit biases the rear 10% more than stock. That should provide a noticable improvement if you went that way.
For mostly street driving and only occasional auto-x I would recommend sticking with the stock brakes and upgrading the lines and fluid. The stock pads will stop you as quickly as any aftermarket pad, they just feel different and won't take as much heat. If you were into serious performance then you need higher temp pads and you would need to change the bias somehow but it doesn't sound like that's what you are needing.
Hope that helps.

I kinda made my own Stage 1 to save a few bucks and get Speedbleeders tossed in.
Now I'm looking for rotors... leaning towards the "H6" upgrade for the rears because that would toss some bias back towards the rear. For the fronts, the Stoptechs seem to have a good rep..

StopTech makes everything in house. From their brakelines to calipers to rotors, they have the necessary machines to make everything. Cobb's big brake kit is basically the StopTech kit just badged COBB on the caliper and not StopTech.
