Squeak caused by strut tower brace?
Squeak caused by strut tower brace?
My '05 WRX had an STi rear strut tower brace installed when I bought it. I've noticed that I get a lot of squeaks back there and I've tried to diagnose the problem over time. First, I noticed that the dealer reinstalled the rear seatback incorrectly. They had not hooked the seat underneath the metal catches, so the seat was not flush. I figured that may be causing the squeak, so I fixed that. Still squeaking. So I took the rear seat out and taped all the hook and bar catches (not really sure how else to describe them) on the back of the seat to minimize the metal on metal noise. Still squeaking.
I'm starting to think that the squeak is actually coming from the brace or the struts because I hardly hear it on smooth roads. Once I hit a bump or drive on brick roads the squeak starts up again and seems to fluctuate based on road surface.
Question is - has anyone else run into this problem and if so, did you find a way to fix it?
Thanks,
ck

I've never heard of squeeky braces in the rear but it is possible. I would take the seat out and see if the squeeking is louder. If it is then undo the bar from the brackets and see if it goes away. Also, while the seat is out check to see if the dealer tightened the strut top bolts all the way down. The mount itself could be loose and squeeking.
I've seen some dandy work from dealers before. A friend of mine had a rear squeek and a dealer insisted that it was his front sturt top mount and wanted to charge $525 to replace it. I told him to let me look at it and it wound up his right rear strut was blown. A new set of KYBs, which was less then what the dealer wanted to fix his "problematic" front top, and the squeek was gone. Go figure.

thanks guys
Sorry I took so long to reply, things have been a little hectic. I'll try both of those suggestions and see if either help. Judging by how sloppy they were with reinstalling the seats, it is possible the bar could be loose or not seated correctly.
