Thumbs up Quiet your springs...

Since JuniorSTI (Jimi) won't write up what he did...I will for him..

He has been experiencing some noise related to springs he installed. We know it is not the install because they were installed on two different vehicles at two different times with the same sort of noise...

The springs are the Espelir ASD. They ride really nice and stiffened up the car from the stock STI springs...but the annoying "Clang" when you hit a sudden bump...

The culprit was the springs up front. Upon sudden impacts, several of the coils would clash...to fix this, he went to Home Depot and found some heavy duty Electrical tape and also some industrial grade tape to wrap around the coils...he can give you the details...I thought it was a good fix...and people on the board here should know of JuniorSTI and Caterpill's abilities...if they decide to go into the automotive field...they will be very successful...Innovative thinkers...

You can reuse the rubber padding that surround the stock STi springs too.

just so that you know this will and should be a TEMPORARY FIX for your problem. not a permanent one. If you are getting "clanging" noises from your struts after you put those particular springs on 2 different cars maybe you didn't install it right or you didn't use seat them correctly in the strut.

As mentioned above (by Luktang) you should have used the stock rubber piece that comes on stock STI springs. this will prevent the "clanging" nose since there is a small space between the strut and the spring. This is a rubber spacer. it appears that you did reuse the rubber piece but it is installed wrong.

You should also check to see if you seated the spring correctly in the strut. There are right and wrong ways to do them.

I am NOT saying that you installed them wrong just stating this in general.

Also if you are putting something in that area of the spring it may appear that you might have the springs installed on the WRONG SIDE? I say this because the coil appears to be to "WIDE" in that area and is and can bang against the cars chasis causing the "clanging" you are referring too.

Another thing to consider. That spring may NOT be correct for your application.

Just things to consider, think about...etc.

Good Luck guys!

and a great TEMPORARY FIX for other people having similar problems.

hmmm...

Yeah, on my recent Prodrive spring install, I did reuse the STI spring silencers...no noise...must be working...

How long does the duct tape last? How many layers did you use?

Hmmm...

The first time these were installed, they were installed by a reputable shop locally...when I changed these out for my coilovers, I couldn't see anything wrong with the install...I also had several other people look at it to see if they could see anything...nothing...

The rubber was used and everything seemed to be fine...I'm not sure about the second time...but the person that did it, has replaced several sets of springs with no problems what so ever...

Very good insight to what may or could go wrong...this thread should help people when they go and install their springs...

well if you look at your picture that you posted there are several things that need to be address...

If you look at the end of the spring that sits in the on the bottom of the strut. the rubber piece is not sitting correctly in there. It has moved from it's correct position thus having he spring make contact with the spring. the rubber piece needs to be wrapped around that bottom of that coil with the opening of the rubber piece facing the MIDDLE of the coil and the rubber (closed part) should be making direct contact with the strut mounting area so that there is not "clanging"

regarding the black rubber piece sitting on the second coil from the bottom. i don't know if it actually goes there (that doesn't look like it should be there)

also the spring could be on the wrong strut. the left side should be on the right and the right on the left... the reason why I say this is because if you look at your picture the chasis side where the spring would sits has made a marking (cleared away the dirt on the black part) which makes me think that the coil is rubbing (to wide at the part) or banging causing your "clanging"

haha, see brent told ya i never wanted to....

wel anyways these springs were on brents 04 struts, installed by vakamon. brent says they made the same exact noise. iirc, the spings dont seat very well on the lower part of the strut. angle was a little off after the strut top was placed on. dunno if u can picture this but the spring on the bottom seat sit crooked where one side would be stitting correctly and the other was slightly lifted _- ...... it didnt matter which side was which as the springs sat the same way when i tried both of them. to my understanding the springs jus plainly had a bad fitment on the front, and had no silencers included, i would use the sti silencers but it doesnt seem to cover all the dead coils so it seems that it will still make noise. the springs are now on 05 struts, didnt seem to have any difference, same noise etc.. from what i read the 05 strut has a shorter shock travel. but thats all i found, some one update me on this if u can...

and yes i just recently learned that 05 suspension shouldnt be droped by springs, but with a full strut replacement, honestly will all my hours searching b4 doing any thing to the suspension, i could not find any info like that. thanks to infek and sykosis to pointing that out to me.....

no proble dude...

since you said that it had fitment issues then I can understand why you're having noises. things are shifting...etc.

Good luck dude.

Regarding not posting this: why not? now that someone has you let everyone else get important information...

i realize that "ghettoness" is not recommended since they are usually referred to as temporary fixes (ie. duct take...etc.) and can make the car unsafe for the driver and other people around them.

no problem on the help!
