Pop/clunk/click from the rear

I have a Pop/clunk/click noise comin from the left rear. Anyone else have that noise? Happens when i first back up or first start moving after the car has been parked. I think it might be the rear axles, but not sure....if anyone else has had this problem and found the cause please let me know. Thx

maybe, just maybe..you might wanna just check if everything is tight...i helped a friend of mine installed his RSB and made the same noise, and come to find out that we didn't tighten the bracket that holds it in place tight enough....hope that helps...

What car do you have? A clunking noise from the rear of the car when backing up and just starting out was a common issue on the '04 STI (maybe '05 too).

What you have is probably the same thing I had...defective rear strut. I had my first set replaced about 12,000 milles and now at 37000 it is back. I do not think that subaru tested them enough before production. My first set was replaced under warranty. I would bet that is your problem, providing it is an '04-05. just fyi

Sounds like your lugs might be loose as well. I'd check them first. It sounds a lot like that until centripital force takes over. That would explain why it make the sound after start up.

I have an 05 STI - had the exact thing happen to me. I traded the stock suspension out for Tein Flex with EDFC so a reoccurance hasn't been an issue. I think this is a major issue for SUBY.

This is what I was gonna suggest too. I have an 03 wrx with Tein S.Tech springs on stock struts, and mine has started doing this as well.....I am about 99.9999999% sure that its my struts going bad. The factory struts were not designed to be on a lowered car (in my case) and could cause premature strut failure, but I have also heard many stories of a totally stock setup going out prematurely as well. I have a set of KYB AGX's that I'm waiting to put on, and that should solve my problem.

So I'd bank on a bad strut. If that is the cause, forget factory replacements, just bite the bullet and upgrade to better struts...you'll be much happier in the long run anyways.

I've read and been told that most Subaru struts seem to start giving up at around 60k miles. Your struts are probably worn. You can have a mechanic look at it, and/or just replace them with some new struts. Time to upgrade?

I too have the same problem in my AUS 04sti . I've noticed it becomes worse after i have the car up on a hoist. I'm booked in next week with my sub dealer to investigate. I will confirm.

I have an 04 STi and I have the same problem. I wonder if the defective strut idea is something different? I think so because I have the clunking sound that the original poster described, but also a sound coming from my right rear strut.

im going through hell looking for the sources of my clunks on my 05 sti. i had clunks from my endlinks, strut, and something with my trunk.

if its the strut thats bad, u can lift up the car, pop off the dust cover, and lube the shaft. it will stop clunking for a bit but will eventually come back. the best lube i used is called lps2, its like wd 40. someone suggested it on another thread and it works pretty good. also just plain lifting the car might fix it for a few minutes.

later, i found that the bottom nut that holds the shock in the strut was not on correctly. the shaft of the shock is supposed to lock in place to keep it from spining while trying to tighten the nut. i figured it wasnt tightend enough because it wasnt in place. so i fixed that and my strut clunks have been gone for a while. sorry if its kinda confusing...

i have yet to figure out completely whats going with my trunk, but i retightend the bolts on the hinges. it helped a bit.

i hate these clunks, they drive me crazy lol
