Question Are lower springs safe?

Hi all,
I own a WRX sedan and I plan to lightly mod it. One of the mods I would like to do is to lower my car about 1.5 in the front and rears (approx). What I would like to know is, can the car be lowered by just swapping out the springs and keeping the stock struts? Or is that bad, and will it cause increased wear on the stock struts eventually leading to the need to purchase new struts that are built for lowered springs? Naturally if the car is lowered I would assume the newer spring would have to be stiffer than the stock springs. Or should I just forget this and upgrade the stock struts and springs and get a new coilover set that lowers the car? I am looking into springs from Eibach, H&K and Tein, are there any other brands out there that have a good price/preformance ratio? What I am mainly concerned with, is to improve my handling while sacrificing a little ride quality. Any input would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks

You can use the Eibach ProKits with stock struts. They will end up wearing out a little faster, but you will still get useful life out of them.

Thanks for the input Ban Suvs.... I have been leaning more toward Eibach springs..... now if I can find out how much they lower front and back, and where I can get them the cheapest for!

You can get Eibachs on eBay for around $180 shipped.
