Talking brake question

While driving on the track in my 04 Sti 6000 miles under heavy braking, I noticed that the pedal was feeling a little soft, is there something that can be done, via slotted rotors, fluid, pads, and or what.

You were probably experiencing brake fade from repeated heavy braking.

I would recommend SS brake lines, Motul or ATE Super Blue fluid, and better pads. With that combination, I have yet to fade my brakes on a track day.

Slotted rotors are good for improved cooling, but really it's the pads and fluid that will make the most difference for you right now.

Besides that, slotted rotors are not cheap at all. You can get some one piece slotted rotors from a few sources for around $500 for all four, but they are not any lighter than the stock so you're not gaining much. There are a few two piece rotors out there, but they'll cost you well over $1K for all four corners. I just bought some DBA two piece rotors myself and will be running them at the track this Friday. I'll report back any improvements.

One other thing you can look into is a master cylinder bracket. They help reduce the fender wall flex when you push on the pedal real hard. Cusco and MRT make one and so does PDM Racing. I have the PDM racing one and it is a super easy install and works better than the Cusco or MRT. http://www.tarmac-usa.com/flash/index.html (scroll down)

I use the Ferodo DS2500 on the street and the track. I'm not super hard on the brakes, so this is a good compromise pad. At $240 for all four corners, it's one of the better priced options.

They also make a DS3000, but that is strictly a track pad.

I have friends who have used the Hawk line of pads with great success also.

My first set of DS2500's lasted 5 track days and about 12,000 miles of driving. They still have some life left, but I put in fresh pads for the upcoming track day. I'll use the old ones as back-up.

Mr. Egan, if you have time during your install can you take some decent pics of those bad boy DBAs? Of both the side facing out and the side that bolts to the hub, please.

Thanks Egan, I order the pads and the MC bracket now I have to locate the fluid, I would assume that the local auto parts store will have it.

Depending on where you live, your best bet for ATE or Motul is on the net. I would recommend the ATE as it has nearly the same boiling point as Motul, but costs nearly 1/2 the price. Don't be fooled by pictures on the net - read the description closely. ATE is usually around $12-15 for a litre bottle/can and Motul is around $15 for a 1/2 litre bottle. By the pics, they appear to be the same size, but you are actually only getting 1/2 the brake fluid.

I bought my ATE from: http://www.stoptech.com

Egan order 2 bottles of ATE, they don't carry the blue any more had some issues so they recommended the gold same boiling point minus the blue dye, will that work?
