Bearings and Brakes

I have a friend with a 1996 Subaru Legacy Wagon. She just had her front brakes replaced a week ago and is now having a hammering noise in the front possibly right wheel. She has been told it is a wheel bearing problem.

Could this problem have been caused by the replacement of the front brakes?

Thanks

Jack that wheel up and test it. Grab the top and bottom and see if you can move the whole wheel & tire in and out. It shouldn't have any free play, and if it does replace the bearing before it ruins the spindle.

*If it is the wheel bearing, do not torque the lateral link bolt with an impact wrench. This is the problem with our wheel bearings going out, at least that's what Subaru is saying. It supposedly warps the bearing housing when over torqued.

Torque the lateral link to 101 +/- 14 ft. lbs. for Impreza's.
Axle nut: 137 +/- 14 ft. lbs.
Brake caliper mount: 38 +/- 4 ft.lbs

Also, this is a good link for everyone to read:
