Another struts and springs or coilovers thread

I am not sure which way to go. Koni or kyb struts and like prodrive springs would be cool, but then again some megan coilovers would be awsome as well, and I could adjust it s ride height all the way up to stock and the adjust the dampening. Megans are only like 1k. I probably won't autocross it but you never know, I am thinking about it. I want to eventually track it so..

Does anyone actually have the megan racing coilovers to provide me some feedback? I'd like to hear about peoples different setups etc if you guys don't mind.. Thanks

In short, get what you want.

I spent 80% of my track time in an old RWD Celica on modified Supra springs w/ KYB GR-2.s Sure it could have been better, but realistically it was just fine. My RS had AGXs and Prodrive P1's and that was an awesome setup. Never got to get on a track with it though...

You don't need coilovers, and they are expensive. I considered them for a while because I wanted to be able to hit the track and the snow in the same car. Then I thought about getting an alignment every time I changed my ride height....

If it's really hard to decide, I recommend deciding on 2 different setups, and go with the least expensive. This way if you feel down the road that you really need coilovers for some reason, you can sell your stuff and upgrade. AGXs are cheap and P1's are not too bad. They would be pretty easy to sell too if you decided to upgrade later.

From what I hear koni struts are some of the best, so I would rather go with something a bit better that costs a bit more than just the cheap ones. And its not like I would be changing the ride height every day, but it is customizeable so thats nice. I cant change my ride height with struts and springs.

firestone offers allignments for life for only 159.99 so if you paid that and changed your ride height every week they would do it up for no cost. Not that they are the best shop, but the ones I have been to have been pretty good.

Konis are awesome, and IMHO definitely some of the best. I was planning on using Konis in my RS but finally didn't because I have installed a few sets and I didn't want to hack up strut housings again... Also, I decided that I probably realistically didn't need them and worst case I could sell the AGXs for not too much and go ahead with the Konis down the road. AGXs are cheap, but they seem like they are pretty good. THe P1's make for a nice drop as well without being too much.

With that same way of thinking I went all out on my Maxima I had before my WRX and got Suspension Tech springs w/ Koni struts and some good swaybars. I honestly didn't really like the setup but because I had spent the money and done all the work myself, I couldn't bring myself to sell them where upgrading probably wouldn't have been a problem. Not sure if that makes any sense.

Again, ride in a few cars with different setups, check them out, and pick the one you want.

For me personally I am all done taking cars to chains for alignments and secondly a deal like that is usually only offered on 'non modified' suspension. In fact most of those places won't even align a lowered car...

Yeah. I started a thread about suspension stuff mostly what people recommended for springs and shocks. I think it is now in the suspension thread of the forum. Anyways, can someone clarify the limited lifetime warranty that KYB has on the AGX's.

I was looking around at prices on KYB AGX's and Koni Sports.

Some guy on ebay had a bunch of brand new AGX's for $343/set + $30ish for shipping and tax.

As for the Koni Sports, I think SubyDude is on the low side for those which comes out to about $650/set + tax.

I am really tempted for the KYB AGX's, but got to pay off bills first.

firestone sucks. I bought the lifetime alignment deal and went there three times. First time it was OK (meaning nothing bad happened). Next time went there, steering wheel was off center and car pulled much worse than when I drove in. Went back to get that fixed a little better but still worse than when I drove in originally.

This is on a stock car.

Went to auto innovation and was able to get the same specs on the left and right. steering wheel was centered, no more pulling.

I went with the stock shocks/stock spring combo it works pretty good considering the price.

But if its at all helpful, the AGX shocks + Eibach Pro springs I has on my '93 240SX was an excelent combo. Especially since the AGXs are fairly inexpensive.

Firestone sucks for lowered cars. You need a good amount of clearance to get onto the jack. Some shops have like 1 jack you can get a lowered car onto but it's always busy!

Seems like you have their lifetime warranty if you don't lower it more than 1.5". Though, I'm not sure how picky they are if you have lowering springs or coilsleeves.

If you want to read darkonion's thread:

https://www.i-club.com/forums/suspension-handling-brakes-195/need-your-suspension-advice-1997-impreza-l-147165/

Most of the stuff I said in there can be used as general information regarding KYBs vs Konis. Though, it's from my limited knowledge, so don't take everything I say as complete fact unless I provided some type of proof.

for struts/springs I have the following:
* Subaru USDM STi Pink wagon springs $ 235
* KYB AGX struts - $400
* Noltec front top mounts - $265

It feels great on the street, and at the auto-x.
For daily driving i'm at 2 in the front, and 2 in the rear.
For auto-x I go to 4/4.

I personally like the AGX setup, but if I had the money I would have gone with Koni inserts.
The problem with that, is that if I went that route I may as well have bought some Helix coil overs. As it is I could have bought the DNA's. Not sure if I should have though. still thinking about it, but want to drive in a car with them first.

Looks like the thread got moved here... Yeah... that sucks. I think a ton of people forget that this part of the forum even exists.

Anyways... if I were to get new shocks, do I need to get top mounts too?

you of course need top mounts, the spring has to attach to something!

The question is, for your planned setup, will you need top mounts with camber/caster adjustment.
