Adjusting Coils W/out spanner wrench

I have heard that you can put a towel over the adjustment piece and take a screw driver and hammer or a bigger wrench that you can adjust over it?

Has anyone tried this?

Or should I just search for a Spanner wrench.

I will eventually get one but I am installing coils tonight and if needed to adjust I would like to be able to.

Thanks, I let them sit where they are at but when snow comes around I will probably end up adjusting them higher.
