When to replace the timing belts?

When to replace the timing belts?
I've got a '97 Outback 2.5L with 68K on the clock. I bought it with 49K and the original belts. Should I have changed the timing belts already? The mysubaru.com site tells me it should have been done at 60K, but they don't call them timing belts, they call them "cam" belts.

Subaru nomenclature for the timing belt is "cam" belt. 60,000 miles is the recommended interval to have it replaced for you vehicle. you should look into having it replaced. Also the front cam and crank seals are prone to leak oil at higher miles, so you may need to replace them also. Just cost effective to replace at same time, but it is up to you.

Thanks for the clarification. And yeah, the seals are leaking too. I'm surprised that the interval is so small--my Neon would go more than 100K between belt changes, and that car had larger cams. Wiggy.

My take on what I have heard about subaru "cam" or timing belts is yes some cars can go 100K + but with subarus it is a bad idea, because timing belts expand over time, and if you wait too long to get this done your motor emplodes. And some people who drive it harder may need to replace it quicker. Cheers
