Question What type of coolant to use?

Hi all,

I'm going to flush my coolant and I was wondering what brand of coolant I should use. I did a search and didn't come up with the answer I was looking for. The maintanance book says I should use only Subaru coolant because of aluminum parts, but will Preston coolant works just as well. Sorry if this question sounds lame I just want to make sure I don't mess anything up on my hard-earned car.

why would you not just use the subaru coolant.after such a investment it would be a shame to save a couple bucks on other fluid.sorry just my thought.

some few weeks ago, i called the wayne subaru dealership if they sold subaru coolant and they said they didn't.... that idiot! now i have some of the green prestone crap in my car corroding away the goodness... :sigh:

any of you know of a good place (besides subaru dealerships) that provide good service for coolant flushes... (btw I'm asking about those places such as grease monkey, pepboys, etc etc...)

80bucks is wayy more than i can afford for a proper coolant flush... and I don't trust myself yet to be doing this kind of thing to my car.

I'm going to go to another dealership today and buy the real subaru coolant.

on the contrary, I've been doing alittle research and stuff like prestone coolant is harmful to your cooling system.... something about subaru's having aluminum engines

Originally posted by Cabal (from Nasioc) I'm surprised he admitted this to you. Intentionally putting in antifreeze with silicates (like the off the shelf green Prestone or Peak) is an excellent way to lead to premature water pump failure, and if the warranty period is over, it's coming out of your pocket. I sure as hell wouldn't tell anyone if I was putting in the wrong thing in the hopes for getting future business. I would definitely not return to that shop.[/B]

well yes I'd assume so... that and also if the brand says it's ok to use in aluminum engines.... but that's what I've learned thus far.

but YO guys... 80bucks is too much for me to do at subaru, anybody know a comprehensive guide to flushing and refilling coolant?... and anybody know how much u need... (i own a 01 2.5 rs sedan)
