Trade-in value?
Out of curiosity, has anybody traded a WRX in and gotten anything close to the KBB trade in value? I had my local dealer give me an estimate on my car, on 04 WRX wagon with 10k miles and in perfect condition and they said they would give me $17k for it.
Now keep in mind they have an 02 WRX for sale on their lot for $20k! $17k for my car is very nearly an insult. KBB tells me I should be able to get $21k for it in a private sale, or $19k via dealer trade-in. Anybody have any experiences to add?

17K is pretty good compared to what other dealerships offer for trade in values. Usually people get around 15K or less. If you don't mind the extra hassle of selling it, you should do it. i don't think you could get 21K as a private seller. 20K sounds a little better.

I dunno I think you should get atleast 19-20k for your car, I mean heck it has only 10k miles on it and it probably is not even a year old. I would definetly sell it privately if I were you, even though it is a hassle sometimes.

keep in mind that whatever they take your car in for. . . what price would they sell it for? also keep in mind that the 05's are out and the kbb values will drop again soon- kbb is usually not "friendly" when it approaches the release of a new MY vehicle.
i would opt for 18500- try that
i'm not sure of the market for wagons in your area- that comes into play also-
BTW-since you are in l.a. why not try taking a trip to a northern state and try there?
the pacific northwest is "the hub" for subies- your value for your wagon should be greater. just a thought

Thanks for the responses. And yeah, I know I'm going to get hit, I'm just comparing to KBB and other 04 WRXs on Autotrader with similar miles. They're all going for $20-$21k. I think I will have to sell it privately if I do decide on trading up, because it'll be a difference of anywhere between $2k - $4k compared to a dealer trade-in.
