Any motor will wear out faster if it isn't maintained, but with proper maintenance I've seen Subaru motors last well over 300,000 miles, which I think is right uop there with Toyotas.
I don't usually think of Nissans in that class though, maybe its just me, but I think of their long term durability being second tier compared to Honda and Toyota.

"Thanks" for your comment!
You are right-maintenance is everything and it's paid for me thru the years.I have always stuck with the japanese engineering because the stats don't lie.Subaru's performance has really caught my eye and think it would be a perfect work vehicle. I travel approx. 25k miles a year mostly state highways/county roads and sometimes on muddy rural back roads. Before I make the jump though would like to hear more about Subaru longevity from owners-Thanks again!

My old '84 GL ran for about 180,000 miles, and the last 60,000 were WITHOUT A SINGLE oil change, needless to say, soon after the oil did get changed, that led to failure, but another nice thing about Subie engines is they are fairly plentyfull on the used/rebuilt market, so getting that back on its wheels swapping out the whole motor cost less than a grand.
My 98 Forester is still going strong at about 100,000, with less than a perfect oil change schdule, but reasonable treatment.
My '02 WRX has been getting fairly regular maintenance and has held up well while averaging 40,000 per year, right now at 136,000.

"Thanks" to tahoeturbo and psoper for serving up some real meat and potatoes info!!! Some model years just see to "click" and the 84 GL obviously was one! A friend has an STI-it's road performance is simply unreal. It's handling reminds me of Porsche. He says that his old WRX was the all around best car he's ever owned but just can't part with the STI for racing. How do you like foresters performance and gas mileage? Thanks again!

If you want to find a great all-around car that blends the blistering on-road performance of a STi and the off-road capability and cargo capacity of a jeep cherokee, look no further than the Forester 2.5 XT. I just bought an '04, and I can say without a doubt, it is the most practical car imagined. Who else but subaru could think of making a car with the clearance of an explorer (but does better off-road, I know - I owned a '99. total crap) with a 0 to 60 of 5.3 seconds!?!? If you aren't familiar with the forester xt, it has the STi engine (2.5 DOHC), slightly detuned, but a torque monster in its own right. AMAZING car... all of my friends are jealous.

Wow! Another big check in the plus column. My STi friend told me tonight that the boxer engine is OK with Porsche and therefore is OK with him.He also belongs to 4 Subaru clubs and members ars singing Foresters praises especially the turbo version."Just as fast as STi and pretty darn close in handling" they say! The low gravity engine is a wonder I guess?!To be honest though,I'm wondering if that turbo takes some of the long engine life in exchange for the "scream teaming". "Thanks again" tahoeturbo!!

Yep, Subaru has a very good reputation for reliability, even with thousands of kids "trying to destroy" their WRXes. My WRX has 50k and it is very solid. If I had to get another car right now it would either be another WRX or maybe even a Forester. I always look at Honda, but their Accord is boring.
