Subaru Oil Filter Wrench

Does anyone know where I can purchase this oil filter wrench (ST 498547000) from the factory service manual?

If that is not available does anyone know where I can get a cup type oil filter wrench that will fit the 02-03 WRX FACTORY oil filter (white one P/N: 15208AA060)

I like to use the auto-clamping style wrench. It has three arms on it and accepts a 3/8" extension. When you apply loosening force (counter clockwise), the arms tighten down on any size filter. It'll work on a wide range of sizes, so if you change the oil on several different cars, you'll only need the one wrench. I also find that this type is better than the cup-style because the cup style can slip on the filter if it's not a perfect fit.

If you still want the cup-style wrench, check any of the major parts stores. They always have about 4 different sizes in stock. You'll see the type I am talking about also.

Edit: Found a picture.

The closest I've ever come to needing one was the first time I removed the filter. Apparently, the factory hires 800# gorillas to install those suckers. Anyway, I just hammered a screw driver in there for leverage...
I know this doesn't answer your question, but the filter is in such an easy spot to reach, surely you can figure something out?

I bought a basic cup-style one from Pep Boys. Take a new filter with you if you are not sure about the size.

I usually have to use a wrench to undo it after the dealer services the car.

if you get a cup style one make sure it has an adjustable arm. you might need to fiddle around with the position as it's pretty tight with the heat shields

I needed to get one of these style wrenches a few weeks ago. After installing borla headers, it was damn near impossible to maneuver my old filter wrench in there.

jon~

i got the same type of wrench BostonWRX posted from NAPA at pearl ridge a few years ago. part number 775-9018 (3 jaw oil filter wrench 2-1/2" to 3-3/4"). I think it was like $6 and have used it for all my oil changes and plus my girl friend's RAV. try and call napa to see who has it if not try can locate it at other stores.

i just checked napa online but they don't have the one i specifically got but they do have this one.

since all 3 of my oil filter wrenches were too large, i lined the inside of the wrench with a strip of thick cardboard. that offered enough grip to remove the tea-cup size oil filter.

i only use this to loosen it up. and just my hand to tighten it.
i find it to be very useful. you can use it for anything, not just filter...
