stupid question? (is the underhood matting necessary?)

so i know its pretty stupid but i was wondering if there is any need for the heat shield fabric that comes on the underside of hoods? i have a 98 rs and my fabric is pretty torn up and falling apart. it hangs down near the engine in some spots so i was wondering if its ok to take off and not worry about. also do the clips just pop out? i was having a bit of trouble with them and i dont wanna break them. sorry for the dumb questions. any advice is appreciated. thanks in advance.

I thought it was primarily to reduce noise rather than heat shielding. Removing the hanging bits before they get caught in the engine sounds like a good idea.

The heat shield in the hood of a car does dispate heat. In some cases without this shield it
can cause problems with the paint on the hood of the car

I wonder if this is because of it being an aluminum hood? Most of my previous cars did not have a liner under the hood - the exceptions being the WRX and a 3rd gen RX-7 (both aluminum hoods).

ok. well i took it off anyways because of its battered shape. i dont know if my engine will ever give off that much heat. i opened up my hood scoop. yeah i know its not functioning much because its na and has no tmic. but itll still give the engine some nice cool air to not let it get to hot im guessing. thanks for the help though.
