STI versus bug eye sedan?
First time poster, been lurking here for quite some time though.
Here's my dilemna: In mid-February of next year, I will be buying a new car, (the wife's car comes in October, so I've got to hold off on mine for now,) and I'm debating between a used '04 STI or a used '02-'03 sedan. The car will be used for a daily driver, weekend autocross car, and maybe even some open track road racing days.
My big issue is this: If I buy a '02-'03, I will have between $7000-$9000 to spend on modding it immediately, based on the current market price for a clean sub-40k mile car. If I go the STI, I'd only have like $2000.00 at the most to spend on mods because of the higher initial price of the car.
Assuming I go for the non-sti, I was looking at picking up a vf-34, injectors, pump, tbe, up-pipe, accessport, various gauges, (egt, boost, a/f hooked to a wideband.) In addition, I'd probably do ver.7 sti take-offs for springs/struts, cusco rear bar, sti "pink bits" in the rear suspension, a decent set of 17" rims and tires, and some other odds and ends.
With the STI, it's looking more like tbe, up-pipe, (if needed, I'm reading conflicting info on this for the sti,) accessport, cusco rear bar, and hopefully a set of tires.
So, for my use, (auto-x, occasional open track, and daily driven,) which would be the better choice?
Any and all replies and input are welcome.
Thanks,
-Ben

STi. Without a doubt. $7,000 - $9,000 will buy you the power to match the STi, but not the interior, suspension (in stock form), bigger displacement motor, 6 speed (by far stronger than the 5 speed) transmission, DCCD, *****IN gauge cluster or the sense of pride in owning an STi.
The difference in cost between the STi and WRX is far less than the cost to make a WRX match an STi in all aspects. Take your money, buy an STi, save the $2k until you get a GOOD feel for the car, the modify what you feel needs to be done to suit YOUR driving.
Sure, you're giving up the unmatchable beauty of the bugeye WRX, but in my opinion, the STi interior (NEW FOR '05!!), motor, wonderful transmission and greater potential ability to mod are more than worth the trade off.

^^ athien, you are right my friend
<----slightly embarrased cuz i sell em!
the STi(MY05) is 213 pounds heavier than a wrx sedan.
my numbers were slightly confused with these (below)
a wrx h.p. to weight ratio is 13.59 lbs/horsepower
while the STi is 10.99 lbs/horsepower
hope that clarifies everything
