Saab 9-2X? (Impreza clone)
I have a 02' Accord EX-V6 (just suspension/tire mods) now and I want to get a car with more pep. My friends with WRX's have convinced me with their speed to look at a Scooby.
What do you guys think of the Saab 9-2X, which is basically a WRX wagon with a slightly upgraded interior? I have $2500-4000 off due to driver's edge/gm points.
Is the wagon substantially different from the sedan? I read the suspension is different on another Subaru board, is this true? I'm just thinking of mild modifications.
Also, would buying an automatic matter? The reason is I really hate rush hour traffic.
Thinking about an STi too, but i'd like the wagon more and I wouldn't be able to use the 300hp to it's potential except on the circuit.

From what I've heard the Saab 9-2 is very expensive compared to the Subaru counterparts.
This is only RUMOR mind you:
- The Subaru 2.5TS is $17,800 base price (I got mine for 17,500 with a bunch of goodies thrown in)
- The Saab 9-2 supposedly is over $20,000
- The Subaru WRX Wagon is $24,000 base price
- The Saab 9-2X (aero, or whatever) is suppsedly around $29,000
The only advantage I saw for the Saab was that the 9-2 Aero comes with a few more luxury perks as well as 17" alloy wheels. I don't think that's enough to justify the price increase.
I'd just buy the Subaru.

I messed up and posted a second time by hitting quote instead of edit to fix a mistake...
Anyway. For $29,000 you can almost get an STI....

they'll sell like hotcakes
Evo,
Given your situation with the $2500-$4000 bous points, wait for the Saab. The credit will put you in the same price range as an 2005 Suabru WRX wagon.
The Saab is much nicer looking, comes with 17" wheels, and based on the pics, a lowered suspension. These are mods you would want to (read: HAVE TO) make on the WRX anyway.
Automatic?? eh...to each their own. My guess is it will have the 90-10 split front to rear power distribution vs. the 50-50 split the 5-speeds have. Torque steer could be a factor with the horsepower.
As others have stated, yes, the price is jacked. But "Saab people" will pay it. The only possible downside is that the 9-2x might have the dismal, rapid, depreciation of the rest of the Saab line. Which is only a concern if you plan on keeping the car for only a couple years.
I like Saabs a lot. I came very close to buying a used 9-5 Aero instead of my 04 WRX wagon. That car was a total blast to drive. When it came down to pulling the trigger, I just didn't see the 9-5 sitting at the mountain bike trailhead or remote whitewater run.
Best of luck.

Subaru is still an independent manufacturer, but GM owns Saab and has an interest (10%) in Subaru, so GM got Subaru to let them use the WRX chassis to make a Saab out of. Changes are minor, mostly cosmetic. It is going into production next year I believe, it's no longer a concept car.
